You do want to get rid of the stirrups. They're insanely dangerous on a bareback pad, because they're not anchored by anything. Bareback pads are well enough; riding bareback in general does a lot to improve your balance, and I recommend it. With pads, make sure you get something with a canvas or such top. Mustang makes some suede topped ones that are the slipperiest things I've ever been on
I use a bareback pad without stirrups. I find a bareback pad just helps me stay on better because it's not so "slick and slippery" like the horse. As well it adds comfort!
If it was me, I would get a bareback pad without stirrups, and if you need more padding just add a few saddle blankets. It works quite well:)
If you are using the stirrups, get a set of Peacock safety stirrups (they have an outer elastic that will release your foot in case of emegency. There are other quick release stirrups out there as well but I think they are "pricey."
What if you're on a horse that you can't ride true bareback on. And have to put something on for support. Then what's best?
I prefer to go bareback than use a bareback pad. It really helps your balance:)
I ride bareback with no pad. I think that riding bare back can improve your relationship with your horse
Use a bareback pad, don't use the stirrups. Your pad doesn't have a tree and you can get hung up in the stirrups if (and when) your bareback pad slips.
