It will depend on the horse and whether I am getting ready for a competition or just training at home. When I am getting to know a horse for the first time, I think it is vital to remember the horse is also trying to get to know me. I like to start simple and straightforward to establish trust with the horse. Then slowly work on transitions and flatwork. It is a fine balance between testing the horse but not pushing him or her too far. Reward for effort! Hope this helps.
