My gelding developed what looks like a abscess on his front heel bulb. He is not showing lameness but it is painful when I touch it. When is it okay to puncture it for drainage?

Keep doing the Epsom salt and wrap BUT make sure there is a designated time to let it breathe with nothing on it. Also don't leave them confined to a stall. Walking around on it will help :) And talk to yo vet!!
I'd just keep doing that and let it drain on its own. Once it drains it will all come out rather than doing it yourself and possibly leaving some of the pus inside.
I soaked it in warm water and Epsom salt and then made a poultice and wrapped it.
