Ask Alexa Fairchild : What are the aids for a good piaffer?
Hi James,
Anky's is still teaching me how to ride a good piaffer. I think that it changes slightly from horse to horse. Although, here in Holland with Anky, we like to train them without using our legs to ask for the piaffer. We like to train them to do it with a small voice click at home so they understand that they have to do it themselves. This also gives us room for when in the competition arena. If we are having some trouble, we can then use our leg to get a better reaction. Another important factor, is to not have a strong contact once in the piaffer. You don't want to teach them to stop in it. If your horse tends to move a bit forward in the piaffer, it is better to give small half halts. This is how I have learnt to ride it so far :)
Thanks for your question,
Alexa
