Lameness may or may not have to due with the bruising. I would definitely look into a new farrier as well. Looks like this one is trimming the feet very small (this is typical with QH's). However it can lead to navicular and all sorts of other not so great things down the line. You will want the new farrier to bring the heel down and widen the back of the foot quite a bit.
No he is a quarter horse. I'm thinking it might just ve bad trimming?

Just saw your pictures! The god seems to be very upright and narrow. Is this a mini or small pony?
Yes,it is pretty common and can happen for a many many reasons. Some include poor hood angles, laminitis and simply bumping the hood wall off a jump. They are usually not lame from these.
