I only brush my horses tails when absolutely necessary, spray it with mane and tail detangler onece a week and bange it so it looks thicker.
1. Brush the tail as little as often

2. Apply a good detangler before brushing (cowboy magic is my favorite)

3. Use a wide tooth comb and be extremely gentle when brushing, start at the bottom of the tail and work your way up, the best way to grow a tail out is to prevent breakage, so take your time

4. Moisturize after every ride, I like the Carr & Day & Martin mane and tail moisturizer because it also detangles

5. Loosely braid the tail and tie it in a tail bag, remove the bag every time you ride and put it back on after the ride, you don't want to ride with the bag in because it pulls a lot on the horses tail and can be uncomfortable for them

6. Use a gentle shampoo when washing the tail and really scrub the tailbone to remove as much buildup as you can (buildup can cause irritation which will make your horse rub his tail), then apply a generous amount of conditioner and gently brush the tail with a wide tooth comb, tie up the tail and leave the conditioner in for a few minutes before rinsing, and when rinsing, leave a little bit of conditioner in the tail

7. Squeeze out as much water as you can and let are dry, as with people, a towel is damaging to the hair and should be avoided if possible

8. When tail is dry, apply moisturizer and detangler and tie the tail up in a bag

9. Keep the tail tidy and not too long, cut the tail to just below the fetlock to keep the horse from stepping on it
