Maybe yeah because I've got used to always anticipating her rearing (she has a horrible habit of it if she don't get her own way) she's very sensitive in the mouth so I always grab the mane anyway if I pull her I know it normally makes her pull back and rush forwards :p
Maybe you're leaning too far forward? Sitting back and deep is important. Use the mane to balance yourself instead of the reins, then pull your horse up.
That's what I do, she just goes for it and I do try one rein stops and she does nothing but turn her head however she will keep running forwards :p
Ride with a brindle on at first and in a indoor arena or enclosed space this way you have more control and the horse can't go anywhere
