Hello Ben,
The chafe guard protects against injuries and allows the horse to be used without having to wait for the healing and complete reconstruction of the skin tissue. The healing is therefore not compromised because the elastic used, despite its thinness, is very resistant and protects thanks to its composition. It also prevents problems when used regularly, and helps prevent injuries, it's a bit like a protective film, preventing the more or less forceful action of the heels from continuing to hurt the horse. I did not think the rubber band was so strong !! After several use there is no tear or laceration.
Have a good day :)
