A friend asked me if she still has to feed her horse 2 a day if he's on full pasture. She rides him 4 times a week but has a hard time getting to the barn am & pm. Any opinion?

I fed my quarter horse once a day and she was fine. Once I got my paint he started losing more weight so I have to feed him 2-3 times a day. Wouldn't hurt for her to try it because it depends on the horse
It depends on the horse, if you've got an easy keeper and the pasture is nice or there's hay access, she may not need to grain at all. I've got two horses on pasture only, and they only get grained when they get pulled in to work or something of the sort. But it depends on the horse. Mine are healthy and look great just from being on pasture. But that's just me.
Hi Miranda,
It really depends on the physical state of the horse (age, condition, health, etc).
If she rides the horse 4 times a week then I think feeding him 2 times a day is okay. She probably shouldn't give him as much hay or whatever she feeds him because he will naturally eat the grass in the pasture.
She should at least come at about 9:30 or 10 to feed her horse the first time and feed the horse again at about 5:30 or 6.
All the horses at our barn get fed in the morning: 7'o clock
Lunch: 1'o clock
Afternoon: 6' o clock
They work 6 days a week and usually 12 to 14 hours a day.
I hope this helped!
Hello Miranda,

It depends on the weight, age, physical condition, and the work her horse is doing every week. Some horses are in the best of health in pasture without any food supplements but some hay in winter, some others need to be fed regularly to be in good health.
She should probably ask the expertise of a vet to estimate the needs of her horse.
But eventually if she decides to stop feeding her horse or to reduce the ration, she'll have to do it gradually to let the organism of the horse readapt to it.
I wouldn't do that, because if you feed a horse at 10 am then they will end up going about 22-23 hours with out any actual food until 10 am the next day.

Grass doesn't give horses all of the nutrients that a horse needs especially if she's riding 4 times a week.

I wouldn't never feed my horse once a day it can start digestion problems and you don't want them to go hungry which will happen since there is no other separation between the meal times.
My horse is fed 3 times a day, 7:30am, 12pm, and 5:30pm. And if I ever changed it I would make it twice a day never just once. Just my opinion
can she cut his feed back to once a day to make it less expensive to drive and he'll still be okay? She says paying someone to feed him isn't an option since she doesn't pay board.
