I believe you should first make sure he listens to your leg and seat aid first in walk halt then walk trot then you progress to trot canter transitions. Later on he will be able mentally and physically to listen to your aid in walk canter transitions. Also make sure that your transitions are smooth and not based on the hand aid only hence not loosing the forward impulsion! Good luck
