Why do horses have long names like "Flying Across a Navy Sky" but people just call them Sky ? Is it just so there aren't two horses with the same name ?

Show name and the shortened name is a stable name
The long name is the show name and the other one is the barn name 😊 Often the name of the horse is too long for the daily life in the stabke so you need a short alternative 😊
It's like all the others have already said. But if you would breed a foal and would give him a name would you take one that is already taken 137419 times or would you give him a name that nobody has? And also you have high hopes in your foal and want it to become successful what if it has a pretty common name then? Nobody would remember your horse. But if there is a very very good "flying across the sky" horse, wouldnt you remember the name easier?
it's a show name then a barn name
it's like a nickname, like the horse's official name would be the long name. This name is used to register in competitions.
The longer name is a registered name that could come from the parents and you don't want to keep calling them that long name so you give them a shortens nickname kinda thing
My first horses name was Rare Treasure but his barn name was Johnny
Because the long name is their regestered name and the short one is the barn name
it's a registered or show name then they are called by their barn name. my mares registered name is Bar Money by Design and her barn name is Sierra. my other's show name is Ima Beach Bum and her barn name is Bailey
And the long a show name
The short one could be a barn name
I believe it's just too long to say ! It's useful to shorten a frequently-used name for horses !
It's a show name¿
