Is a metal D ring bit one step up from a happy mouth bit?

Depends on the mouth piece. I use a Myler level 1 D ring on my horse and he goes absolutely amazing in it. He is light and supple and is the only bit I have found so far that he doesn’t fight contact. It has a three part mouth piece and each piece moves individually thus no nutcracker or pinching motions. Also has copper inlay for salivation.
No. The nutcracker action isn't that nice. I'd say a double jointed snaffle is next then a Day ring
