Does anyone have any neat little braiding/plaiting tips and tricks? E.g. how do you tackle short/long necks, thin/thick manes?

It depends on discipline. For dressage you want 5/7 plaits. For eventing you want as many as possible. I would dampen the mane and plait tightly. I would thread rather than band as it keeps plaits in for longer. For horses with long necks use 5 plaits to make it look shorter and more muscled . for short chunky necks you want to use 7 plaits to give it the illusion of being longer
short neck: lots of braids. long neck: not as many braids. thick manes: pull. thin manes: grab more hair for the braid
Put baby oil in your horses hair the night before the show then put your horses tail in a tail bag until the next day but make sure you can brush your brush through it easily or you've wasted your time
