Half halts are a pull release motion using either the one or both hands. It will cause the horse to gather them selves to pick up the right lead. you have to keep contact with the other hand while doing a half halts with the other hand
@applebel21 ok, but what is a half halt, srry I am western lol
The horse may be unbalanced and needs extra help getting balanced. If trying to pick up the left lead use right rein half halts to help to horse gain balance. Use the other rein to get the other lead. Hope this helps.
Hi @agilequines I am not unbalanced! All my other horses are good with leads but when I got her she already had her leads all messed up!
most of the time a horse picks up the wrong lead due to rider error. the rider unbalances the horse so the horse picks up the wrong lead. make sure youre balanced and not anticipating

Hi Alexa!

Lots of stopping and starting, I always stop when its the wrong lead (dont tell the horse off) lots and lots of praise when its the correct lead.

Have you tried over exaggerating the bend and using your outside leg as well as the inside (I only use inside leg to ask for canter once its established).
