I'm looking at a horse that is out of state. When should the prepurchase exam be and should it be a vet over there?

In general, the vet check comes after you’ve tried out the horse. It could be any vet of your choice but it’s more convenient to have one do it from the area. My suggestion would be to ask a vet you trust to suggest someone in the horse’s area.
