Injuries are unfortunately part of having horses, especially competition horses. We do our absolute best to manage them and keep them injury free but unfortunately sometimes it’s just unavoidable.
I find it very difficult when my horses get injured, mostly because I don’t like the thought of them being in pain. The competition aspect of it is secondary to me. It’s annoying yes when you’ve worked hard to get them fit and ready for a competition but the main thing is their health and well-being.
Last year I took my horse Harley to Paris. He jumped amazing the first day and was third in his first class. The second day he had a small overreach that got a skin infection. He was very lame and sore on it and couldn’t compete. It was frustrating but I was more relieved that it was something that looked terrible but he would recover in small space of time. True enough he was lame throughout the show but trotted up sound the first day home!
