Today I’ve tried to get on my gelding bareback, but every time I tried to get on since he’s pretty tall he tried to bite me.. do you have suggestions?

Very informative!! I appreciate it, thanks for your time
There could be a few causes of this, including:
1- lack of respect for you
2- bad habit
3- sore back

1 -Before doing anything new with your horse, you must earn his respect by moving his feet to let him know that you are the herd leader in your herd of two. If he does not respect you, he has no reason to trust you or to allow you into his personal space onto his back. This can be done through consistent groundwork (for respect) and desensitisation (for trust).

2 -If you, or someone else, has tried to mount him bareback before and he has leant round to nip and you have jumped off because of that, then he will have learned that if he threatens to bite you, you will get off his back. A habit grown out of bad timing and bad decisions means that you have made the wrong thing easy and the right thing hard; you dismounting when he tries to bite is the right answer for him because it takes the pressure off him. You can get him out of this habit by making him work every time he attempts to nip you, since this makes the wrong thing hard (nipping = work) and the right thing easy (not nipping + allowing you on his back = rest). You can make him work by moving his feet by lunging, yielding hindquarters, backing, etc...

3 -Bareback naturally is uncomfortable on the horse's spine and they do have sensitive spines, hence the gap you will find on the saddle which avoids any pressure on the spine. If you getting on his back is causing him discomfort, then the only way he can communicate this to you is by nipping you, since the only way our horses can communicate with us is through body language. Make sure he is not tense in his back anywhere or feeling any discomfort before getting on. If not, it may be an issue to do with the top 2 possible causes.

Hope this helps :)
