I think, whether it is in eventing, dressage or jumping, maturity needed to enter the high level comes around 8 years old.

On the other hand, between 9 and 12 years old, it's the best time to be efficient. The ideal is to have the horse as soon as possible and to train him your way, if you have the right method of course. But above all, the horse gets used to his rider and there's a real communication between them.
