Hi Quin
For horses:
2 steps for take of
2 steps for landing
4 steps for 1 stride

For ponies:
1 step for take of
2 steps for landing
3 steps for 1 stride

Hope this helps

As I walk, I count like this: 1,2,3,4(one stride), 2,2,3,4(two strides), 3,2,3,4(three strides) etc... four large steps=one stride. Sometimes, horses are more open in outdoor rings, or the indoor is just smaller, so adjust your own steps accordingly. (I’ll walk bigger steps outside and slightly smaller ones inside, for example) Always count one big step at the beginning for a landing stride !
One horse stride is equal to four large steps from you. If you are setting up jumps then you have account for the take off and landing strides, which are two steps away from the jump. Hope this helps!
