How do you decide when it is the end of life for your heart horse? He’s still e/d & bright at 25 years old but so thin, won't gain weight, I tried it all... winters in the north are so rough

I know this can be a tough choice to make. You have to think about how the winter will go. If he won’t be happy and will be struggling in the cold then it may be best to put him down soon. Is he going to get sick in the winter because of the shape he is in now? Will he be able to handle it and be happy? Has his health been declining fast or is he staying the same? I would take these in to consideration.
I know this is an incredibly hard choice to make. Losing one of your animals means you are losing family. I know how tough it can be to cope with it too, so if you need any more advice deciding anything please message me.
I wish you and your horse the best.
