Hi there! I have sadly had this a lot. I have found that turn is extremely helpful. While this seems like you are letting the horse get what it wants it is really you tricking them. Once they start to move backwards use your legs lots and turn him even if you have to turn him 180 to get his to stop giving your horse a que that they must focus is the first step. Once they either stop if move forward take off your legs and give with your hands right away. I did this repetidly for several months before the problem was completely gone but you will notice a difference in the first month if you remain consistent. Eventually the horse will respond to you steering them away from the issue they will move forward. THIS IS IMPORTANT- if you feel at all nervous or worried that your horse is going to rear/ flip over DISMOUNT! Do not put yourself or your horse in danger. You can always get right back on
Why can’t you use a crop on him? If he is not moving forward, you need to have someone on the ground tapping him with a crop to get him to move forward. It seems like the horse is either disrespectful to the aids or doesn’t understand what he’s being asked.
