Ask manuelgodin: Do you have some advice to start riding only with a neck rope?
Hello Kessy,
Before removing the halter/bridle, make sure you are able to ride your horse only using your body weight, look and legs. You should have control over direction and speed without using your reins. Moreover, establish a clear cue to stop: it could be a vocal signal, a gesture, a movement with the stick… whatever your horse understands. When you feel that it is the right time, that you have finesse and precision with the halter, remove it. If you followed the steps, the only obstacle you might face is… yourself! Most of the time, horses do not react to the change in equipment but in our attitude, because we are nervous. Act normal and ride like nothing has changed! At first, you can even use your arms and hands as if you were holding reins. At the beginning of your neck rope journey, ride in a safe and closed area that your horse knows well. If possible, ask a professional to assist you.
