Ladies and gentleman, it's goodnight from us! Completing the set, and taking a bow for you on behalf of the whole gala team, the one and only Atinado, signing us off for the 2018 Gala reviews - our final horse, and our oldest friend. Many of you love this stunning black Lusitano stallion. With Gonzalo Marques Obeso he demoed at show 1 back at Tall Trees, and twice performed in the Evening Gala with the garrocha, and an Alta Escuela routine. He is also the star of the show artwork, the original photo from 2013 by Claire Spelling who also took this image. For year 5, it was only fitting that he should be ridden by owner Zoe Paramore. Their beautiful dressage to music routine with Zoe riding sidesaddle was the perfect beginning to the gala performances. Atinado makes the most elegant partner for his owner, there is so much love and bond between them. Zoe's music was designed by Gaynor Colbourn and included a little piece of the Flora Dance music - with Zoe being a Helston girl, this brought a real flavour of the South West to the evening. Thank you Zoe and the whole Southey Farm team. We had to move things around a little with Zoe also winning the Supreme on the day, and were very grateful that Zoe managed to present her mare Esmeralda and then ride Atinado with the assistance of her team. Do follow their page - they hold regular clinics and events as well as having livery at Wellington in Somerset and we cannot recommend this team of people highly enough. So that's all of the reviews done, once again, thank you to all of the gala performers who delivered such a world class night of entertainment here in Devon. And to all of the visitors who came and joined us. Next up, news on 2019 watch this space. And coming later, a movie of the gala night for you all to enjoy - filmed from three different locations, this will be a special look at some of the UK's very best Iberian horses under the spotlights here in Devon
Another goodbye. Our second retirement of the Gala night. Our Supreme Champion for two years, a Reserve in another. The most successful horse at the show over the 5 years. Also appeared in the Gala evening of 2016 with Peter Maddison-Greenwell. A Calificado PRE stallion with many national titles to his name. For one last time Paul Bettens (award winning Spanish handler) ran out this stallion, and his owner Chrissie Hall led him out of the arena. Now 20, his showing days are at an end, but he will still tick over in a little bit of work. As one of our champions, this is a horse that will always be special to the show, an old friend we were pleased to be able to give a final salute. Thank you to St Pirans Stud and everyone involved with him for honouring us with his final run out; a very special moment. Photo Fleur Churchill
Drawing near the end of show reviews... here's the first of two goodbyes to old friends before our oldest friend gives you all a bow for 2018. It's the third year of incredible Iberians taking their final salutes at the show. It began with PRE Balastro and then Lusitano Relento in 2017, both horses competed at the very highest levels. One very special PRE was scheduled for this year; then unexpectedly due to health issues, another Lusitano was added. The very beautiful Princessa II - known as Whitey was scheduled to perform bareback and bridleless with David Zuend. As it turned out, her health did not permit a full show. She was hitched in harness and dragged a jump into the arena as part of the performance. But then for one final time, was ridden at the South West Iberian Show with no saddle or bridle, under the incredible spotlights and atmosphere, with total trust in David. This mare once unrideable, has been all over the world to events as big as Equitana in Germany. We've been blessed to have her show the connection the wonderful horses of Portugal are so willing to offer. Thank you to David and Alison Zuend for bringing Whitey out for us, she was only able to walk a little, but we were lucky to see this incredible partnership one final time. We all wish her a wonderful quieter life and retirement. Photo by Claire Spelling
Another look at the mesmerising performance during the Evening Gala by The Association for British Working Equitation development squad team also featuring their trainer Paulo Santos designed by Georgia Shone. You'll see some more video soon of this magical moment that will always be etched in everyone's memories and dreams ... “Let's suppose that you were able every night to dream any dream that you wanted to dream". Fantastic to see nearly all the riders we were lucky enough to see here at the South West Iberian Show in the Iberian Dressage Masters - MCI GB have made the qualifying scores they needed and made selections to represent the European finals taking place in the UK in October at Bury farm. Congratulations and good luck everyone 🍀 🇬🇧
The amazing Paulo Santos in the Evening Gala. This exceptional rider with international success in both dressage and working equitation, showed such style and grace in this beautiful traditional piece with the garrocha on Holly Barber's Lusitano Exparta d'Atela. You can follow him at QRP Dressage Lusitanos for details on lessons, clinics and beautiful horses for sale. Thank you Paulo, Holly and Georgia Shone. Photo by Claire Spelling
The incredible banners you see in the arena at the show were created for us by local artist Gillian Anderson - each year she magically appears with one more large piece, the arena is getting more and more stylish every year! Gill is available for private commissions of your horse, or stylised art of any size. This year we added red panels all the way round which were hemmed and prepared by team member super Shelley Francis's mum and Gillian came and freestyled images onto them - in show Iberian art, simply brilliant. Thank you so much Gililian and Jackie - you changed the look of everything dramatically, simple but effective and we're VERY grateful for all your hard work - thank you!
Our Supreme Champion for 2018 - Lusitano mare Esmerelda with Zoe Paramore from Southey Farm. This is the first mare to take the supreme title, and with a lady rider too ... HERE COME THE GIRLS! This win for Portugal brings the show now to 3-2 Spain-Portugal. Can the Lusitanos even it up next year... or will it be another PRE? We LOVE the camaraderie between the judges as they make their final decision, it is always done with great spirit and collaboration Congratulations Zoe - we are thrilled for you, such a popular win across the board. The judge was Tiago Albergaria of the APSL. Photo by Claire Spelling official indoor arena pictures here www.clairesphotography.co.uk/southwestiberianshow2018
It was very much a girl power night - here's lady stunt rider Jasmine Jackson-Lloyd from the DOLBADARN FILM HORSES upside down at a gallop in the Evening Gala! Originally from Exeter this incredible rider took everyone's breath away. Photo Fleur Churchill
Paul Bettens raised a fantastic £100 for the Air Ambulance running horses for competitors on showing day. With our own lovely Lynn Combes who you all know from the show having been rescued by them this year after a nasty fall, we were delighted when Paul confirmed his charity choice today. Here he is with Lago Icon owned by Emily Burns who went on to be our Champion PRE and overall reserve. We're going to run some masterclasses over the coming year finishing with a Friday afternoon masterclass at the show. So this gives local competitors chance to develop their skills running iberian horses in hand over the coming year. Paul will remain on the show team moving forward as competitor support. Thank you Paul for all your hard work. Picture by Claire Spelling official indoor arena pictures here www.clairesphotography.co.uk/southwestiberianshow2018
