How do you guys like to do your trot to canter transitions and do you have personal preferences of techniques, cues, etc.?
My mare and I have different cues for different things. When I want her to trot I cluck, when I want her to canter I make kiss and add pressure with my legs. Some horses like voice commands too. For example, with my uncles horse u have to tell him either trot or cancter with leg pressure.
If you had a chance to ride any horse, past or present, who would it be?
This is gonna sound super weird but I would ride my old horse Henny. I had to sell her when I was younger but we had an amazing connection. Or I would ride Fallon Taylor’s horse Baby Flo.
My mare normally has a lovely temperament but has recently been nasty and won’t let anyone up
It could be pain related or heat. Some horses are nice during there time but other could be quite moody. My mare is a very calm and nice horse and is always nice when she’s in heat. She started getting all moody and didn’t like use riding her. We had a vet come out and look at her and she turned out to be pregnant. We didn’t think of that Bc it was winter so we thought she was gaining weight from us not riding her as much and eating a lot of hay. We also had our stallion gelded but he could still produce for like a couple months after. When we found out she was pregnant she was due in a month. We all felt terrible! So I would have a vet come out and look at her to make sure she isn’t pregnant. Also have a chiropractor come and look at her.
I have bad knees so I had to have stirrups shorter than for my height. I’ve been told I to lengthen them by an instructor but I don’t know if that would knock my balance?
I have a bad knee. I have had one surgery on it about three years ago and I just had another one. Keeping my stirrups shorter always hurt my knee and made me very uncomfortable. Making them longer made me feel unstable. So I started to work on my balance. I really focused on having good posture at all times, I did little things to help my balance improve, and I started to ride bareback more. Riding bareback really helped bc it has your whole body sit the way it’s supposed to sit. It really helps with balance too. If u can balance perfectly while riding bareback, then riding in a saddle should be very easy. I say u start to ride bareback more and get more of a feel as to how your horse moves. It will help for when u make your stirrups longer and give u more balance confidence. I hope this helps!
