When I ask my horse to trot, he trots but then almost immediately picks up the canter. He anticipates, and sometimes he's very swappy with his leads. Do you have any recommendations to try?
This can be because he's unbalanced so as soon as you manage to get him to trot halfhalt him and make him trot slowly and do it on a small circle and then trot for few steps and go back to walk and try again. Don't let him rush. Take your time and let him understand what u wan of him. Putting some trot poles will help in rhythm and make him focused and thinking forward. But I'd only add poles after I managed to get control of his trot.
Without getting a saddle fitter, how can you measure for yourself for a saddle?
When you're fitting the saddle by yourself you put it on horse's back without numnah and check if:
You can fit 3 to 4 fingers at the wither,
Check if the knee roll isn't pinching horse's shoulders,
Check if the saddle easily tips forward (if so it's bad),
And look at overall picture of your horse wearing this saddle and see if it's too small or too big.
