My horse keeps refusing to make circles trotting, so I hit him with a crop and he freaks out! He always wants to go the other way. He had a vet check and he is fine. What should I do?
I think you should try using outside leg a little bit more. If your horse is unresponsive try using a dressage whip to tap him right behind your leg rather than hitting him. By hitting him you are telling him to go faster, he will become hollow and you don't want that because he won't be on the bit. I have had that problem once, but figured out that my horse won't do a thing unless she on a bit. By using a whip I just made things worse because the horse felt like she needed to run off and fight me. I trust that helps :)
What are some methods you use to help calm your horse or get him/her re-focused when he/she spooks or gets distracted while riding?
The mare I'm currently riding spooks at everything and anything and just takes off. I make a small circle (10m) and when she slows down to walk I get her on the bit again. If I know that she will spook at something I make her come to a halt and just pet her to calm her down. I have been riding her for years now so I know that sounds scare her, but I guess it's not that easy with the horse you don't know well. I hope this was useful :)
