How can I learn to canter and jump bareback?
"Just. Ride. Bareback. There is no special formula except: if it hurts you are doing it wrong. After two weeks it's not going to be an issue because your body naturally adapts and realigns. And naturally when you are comfortable (and hence more confidant) then what the hell ... jump over one cavalletti. No doubt, you'll probably screw up but even the most talentless rider can LEARN to ride by screwing up as much as possible but... Just. Ride. Bareback. "
What can I do to get my horse back in to the show ring once he has been off for 3 months and just started jumping cause I don't won't to rush him??
"Put it this way. If you stopped going to gym for three months. How long will it take to get fit enough to run a 10km?"
How can I get my horse to tuck his legs in over a jump?
"Depends on his age. If young then it will take time. Gymnastics, be giving with your hands so that he jumps though his back. And then more gymnastics. Religiously. "
How to get a fast horse to slow down through jumps? She constantly speeds up no matter how much I half halt, and how slow I go into the jump.
"A case of mental relaxation. Small jump (50cm) transition to WALK about 30/40m after jump, then make a 15-20m circle. Upwards transition into trot on the circle until she relaxes, point her towards jump but the moment she starts pulling towards the jump then you QUIETLY transition her to a walk, talk to her, and make that circle again until you can feel her breathing and relaxing. Then face jump again and slowly trot. If she pulls quietly transition to walk and then WALK her over the jump. Until you can feel she is waiting and relaxed. Now... your job is to slow everything down. Stay off her mouth. Half halting incorrectly can actually have the opposite effect:pulling. Try and keep transitions as slow and relaxed as possible. If you feel yourself getting anxious then start singing. Helps with breathing. Put a neck strap on so that as you go over the jump and there is a chance you are left behind then you can grab onto the neck strap. It requires IMMENSE patience. But you can't enjoy jumping until both you and the horse are relaxed going over a pole OR a cavalletti. Let me know how it goes."
So I am currently learning diagonal and I was wondering if I can ask the horse to trot and sit for two beats then start posting ? Would this work ?
"Go and ride a few fifteen meter circles or a turn into the short side of a ménage. If you want to learn diagonals then trot the circle on the right diagonal and then once on the wrong diagonal. Keep doing that. Don't make it a habit to look down. It will take forever to actually learn feel. You will start feeling the "wrongness" of being on the incorrect diagonal. As for sitting trot-that's only so that when you start trotting you get the feel of the correct diagonal. It helps but after a while you will automatically just start on the right diagonal without knowing. "
