In the fall at a horse show, what do you wear when you are not riding?
When I have the time to go watch a show without working at the show at the same time (about two times a year 😂) I tend to wear jeans, a white blouse with a navy jumper or a turtleneck long sleeved tshirt in winter or autumn, in summer a simple dress with sneakers.
Whoops I cut my horses mane too short! I have a big dressage show in 2 weeks time, do you have any tips on what I can do to get it to grow and how can I plait it? It's probably around 2-3"...
Hi Kenza, I don't think you can help the hair grow, try not to brush it too much until the prep for your show. With mane that short I think you will have to make a lot more plaits so they will stay in place, and only fold them once. I had the same problem, and I just went with hunter style plaits 😅 still better than loose mane!
What are the first things you do when you arrive at a show? I would like to know if we have different routines depending on our country 🙂
Hi Charlotte, here in the Netherlands the first thing I do is check on my horse after arriving, then check in and pay at the show office. After that I either walk the course for showjumping/cross country or watch some dressage riders in the warm up, then I go get my horse ready when it's time. I like to have some extra time so I can take it slow, fix some plaits if necessary, chill with some other riders and not hurry. My horse will get so stressed when I have to hurry, making everything go even slower 😂
What is your favorite brand for a jumper saddle? Not like CWD or Devoucoux my bank cant take it 😂
Hi Nicole, if you have a nice saddle fitter you can look at second hand saddles, this will make your bank account a little less sad! I have a second hand Stübben Edelweiss, it's always been taken care of very well and it still looks and sits very nice, even for shows 😊
My horse and I are switching barns, and our first day at the new one is tomorrow! I’m really nervous, because there will be many new people, horses, and trainers. Do you have any tips?
Hi Zoë! Very exciting, moving to a new barn! Don't be afraid to ask questions. Every barn operates in its own way, some prefer you watching when your trainer is schooling your horse, some prefer not. Some will pair your horse up for a paddock buddy, some want you to choose one yourself or prefer individual turnout. Always clean up after yourself, this will keep your barn owner very happy and yourself as well 😊
How many horses do you own/show/ride?
Hi Brooklyn, I own one, show 2, and ride 3-4 depending on how busy the horses' owners schedule is that week! I ride my own horse daily, ride the one I show 1-2 times a week, and train the other two also 1-2 times a week.
Do you pay more than 600 dollars a month for board?
Hi Julia, I pay around $350 (converted from the euro) a month for 'full board' as we know in the Netherlands, which means the horse gets fed hay and hard feed, turned out/walker, and mucked out. Riding has to be done/arranged by the horse's owner.
I've heard that fragrance could have effects on horses' behavior, have you noticed it and do you wear perfume when you're at the barn?
Hi Lily, my horse doesn't seem to like it when I wear perfume. The scent of perfume is very strong to horses, I think he prefers me to just smell like 'me' 😊
